I have a Trane unit which was installed in January of 2001. It has not preformed the way I expected and as of this time both the a/c and the heater have gone out. I need a unit that will last. The home is approm. 2600 square feet with a new roof and insulation.

An air conditioner is a sophisticated piece of machinery, and AC repairs of your unit should be trusted only to a professional. Unless you have above average AC repair skills, it's not recommended that you attempt any air conditioner troubleshooting on your own. One of the biggest causes of air conditioner problems is improper maintenance. Keeping your unit clean and free of debris is something every home owner can do. Simply remove the protective cover, and clean dust and dirt off the condenser fins. Hose down the fins if necessary, taking care to avoid splashing water on the motor and wiring. Accumulation of dust on the fins can reduce the cooling efficiency of your unit. Major AC repair problems like compressor failure, can also develop.
If your air conditioner doesn't turn on, look for a breaker that's tripped, or a fuse that's blown. If the temperature drops below the temperature that's set on the thermostat, it can mean an improperly installed thermostat. If there is water accumulating at the base of the air conditioner, it may be a fault with the pump, or there may be something in the way of the flow of water. Generally, air ducts are able to conduct noise quite easily. If you would like a quieter air conditioner, get a repair technician to place insulation duct between the system and the duct work runs. Many AC repair problems result from improper installation and insufficient HVAC maintenance. For instance, if the unit is low on refrigerant, it usually means that it was not charged well at the time of installation. Allowing your AC filters and coils to collect dust can also affect the efficiency of your air conditioner, and over a period of time, you can find yourself with a host of AC compressor repair problems, like failure of the compressor.
